Which aspect of the navicular bone receives the least ammount of blood supply?
The middle of the navicular bone.
The medial aspect gets blood from the posterior tibial artery.
the lateral aspect gets blood from the dorsalis pedis.
Thus the central 1/3 is at risk for fractures etc.
What is the most common navicular fx?
Dorsal avulsion of the navicular.
What ligament causes a dorsal avulson of the navicular in a plantarflexed/inverted motion?
Talonavicular ligament.
What ligament causes a dorsal avulsion of the navicular in a plantarflexed eversion?
Dorsal tibionavicular ligament of the deltoid ligament.
What is the general mechanism of injury for the navicular tuberosity?
Generally from an eversion or too strong of a pull of the posterior tibial tendon or spring ligament.
What is the clinical presentation of a navicular tuberosity fx?
Pain over the navicular when everting the foot or with weight bearing.
Seen best on a lateral obique X-ray.
How does the navicular body typically get fractured?
Typically fractured when falling with the foot striking plantarflexed.
What is a type 1 navicular fx with displaced body?
Transverse fracture.
What is a type 2 navicular body fx that is displaced?
This is the MOST COMMON
with the fx line dorsolateral to plantar medial
What is a type 3 navicular body fx that is displaced?
Comminuted fx in the sagittal plane of the body of the navicular.
Track and field hurdler complaining of midfoot pain.
Think navicular stress fracture most commonly seen in the central to lateral aspect of the navicular.
What is the treatment for a navicular stress fracture?
Non weight bearing for 6-8 weeks.
This bone is often also fractured in lis franc injuries

The inferior calcaneocuboid ligament often associated with ankle sprains.
