Exam II Ch 22 Lymphatic Flashcards

1
Q

Functions of the Lymphatic System

A
  1. Fluid balance
    - Lymphatic capillaries collect fluid called LYMPH
-Lymph passes through the lymphatic vessels back to
    the blood
  2. Fat absorption
    • Lacteals are lymphatic vessels located in the lining
      of the digestive tract.
-The LS absorbs lipids and other substances from
the digestive tract through the lacteals
    • Lipids enter the lacteals and pass through the
lymphatic vessels of the venous circulation
-The lymph passing through these lymphatic
vessels, called CHYLE (white because of their
      contents)
  3. Defense
    • MIcroorganisms and other foreign substances are
filtered from lymph by lymph nodes and from blood
      by the spleen.
-Able to destroy them and fight infections

Q

Know the various lymphatic organs and tissues and how they contribute to homeostasis.

A

Lymphatic organs contain lymphatic tissue which consists mostly of lymphocytes, but also macrophages, dendritic cells, reticular cells, etc

Lymphatic tissue that is not surrounded by tissue is nonencapsulated. When it is surrounded by tissue it is called capsule: lymph nodes, spleen, thymus

LYMPATHIC NODULES
Denser arrangments of lymphatic tissue organized into compact, spherical structures. Numerous in loose connective tissue of the digestive, respiratory, urinary, a reproductive system.

TONSILS
Large groups of lymphatic nodules and diffuse lymphatic tissue located deep within the mucous membrane within the pharynx. They protect against bacteria and other harmful material entering the pharynx from the nasal or oral cavity.

-PALATINE TONSILS: What we usually think tonsils are.
Lymphatic masses on each side of the junction
between the oral cavity and the pharynx.

  • PHARYNGEAL TONSILS: Collection of closely
aggregated lymphatic noduled near the junction
between the nasal cavity and the pharynx. When
enlarged they are called ADENOID or ADENOIDS (
    interfere with breathing)

-LINGUAL TONSILS: A loose collection of lymphatic
nodules on the poster surface of the tongue.

LYMPH NODES:
Filters the lymph by removing bacteria and other materials.

Lymphocytes congregate, function, and proliferate within lymph nodes
