Exam I Flashcards
Applied Research
Takes place in laboratory settings or non-laboratory settings designed to replicate authentic environments, offers applicability, At its core, applied research is oriented towards identifying practical solutions to specific problems.
Basic Research
Has little direct clinical application, Takes place in a carefully controlled laboratory, focuses on curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake
Theoretically-Motivated Research
Considers compatibility of observations with specific theory
May seek to advance a theory
…or simply borrow from a theory’s authority
Phenomenological Research
Less concerned about whether a study fits into theoretical framework, a type of research that seeks to explain the nature of things through the way people experience them
Find relationship, report relationship
May emphasize application
Stages of the Scientific Research Process
Identify a subject area
Search and review the literature
Define a topic
State a general question or problem
Phrase an operationally defined hypothesis
Plan the methods to test the hypothesis
Collect data
Analyze data and interpret the results
Write about the findings
Qualitative Inquiry
Descriptive/explanatory in nature
Involves the observation and analysis of information in natural settings to explore phenomena, understand issues, and answer questions , Is data driven versus hypothesis driven
Descriptive research
normative, epidemiological, census, Provide information regarding scope of problem or point of comparison (e.g. lab values)
Observational (sometimes referred to as “exploratory”)
Compare groups,Identify relationships between variables, researchers observe participants’ ongoing behavior in a natural situation
true-experimental research
an experiment conducted to prove or disprove a cause-and-effect relationship between two variables.
Quasi-experimental research
quanitative research method, involves numerical data collection and statistical anaylsis
