42
Q

Contrast Transcendentalism with Anti-Transcendentalism. (three ways)

A

Transcendentalists believed that men were inherently good, while Anti-Transcendentalist believed men had the potential for both good and evil. Anti-Transcendentalism thought Trans had too much of a rosy outlook on life, they believed that truth and existence were elusive. Anti-Trans thought nature was unforgiving and indifferent while Trans believed that nature was a doorway to the spiritual world and that everything in the world was a reflection of the divine soul. With Trans, Spontaneous feelings and intuitions are superior to deliberate intellectualism and
rationality.

43
Q

Contrast Realism with Naturalism. (three ways)

A

In Realist stories the characters are more important than the plot, while in Naturalist stories the characters are dominated by events (conditions) in the story. Naturalism is different than Realism because it has a facet called Determinism which is belief that characters have no free will. Naturalists view individuals as being at the mercy of socioeconomic and biological forces, whereas realists hold that humans have some degree of free will. Realist stories often include complex ethical choices that had to be made , while Naturalist’s stories include themes like “man against nature”, “man against himself” or “survival of the fittest” Author’s voice is rarely heard in Realism stories, while Naturalist authors out their characters under the control of nature, chance, or fate

44
Q

A

Anne Bradstreet because she was a puritan woman. Puritan women were supposed to be subservient and humble. Devoted to God, husband, and children in that order

45
