Simvastatin (Zocor)
Atorvastatin (Lipitor) Lovastatin (Mevacor)
Which drug is an inhibitor of VLDL synthesis and secretion?
Niacin (Nicotinic Acid, Vitamin B3) (Niacor)
Which drugs are bile acid-binding resins?
Cholestyramine (Questra) Colestipol (Colestid)
Which drug is an inhibitor of cholesterol absorption?
Ezetimibe (Zetia)
Which drugs are fabric acid derivatives (fibrates)
Fenofibrate (Tricor) Gemfibrozil (Lopid)
Statins - Lipitor, Zocor, Mevacor
Class: Inhibitors of Cholesterol Synthesis MOA: inhibits HMG-CoA Reductase
Use: 1st line for hypercholesterolemia
SE: m protein degradation, renal burden/failure
Contra: prego, breast feeding, kids <10
Niacin (Nicotinic Acid, Vitamin B3) (Niacor)
Class: Inhibitors of VLDL synthesis and secretion
MOA:
-Reduces lipolysis in adipose, synthesis of VLDL and TRGs in the liver
-Inhibits VALD secretion
-Increases production of apolipoprotein A-1 Uses: vLDL/^HDL
SE: flushing, liver toxic, hyperuricemia (gout)
Cholestyramine (Questran) Colestipol (Colestid)
Class: Bile Acid-Binding Resins
Use: Hypercholesterolemia, Pruritus (dt cholestasis/liver failure)
SE: constipation, flatulence, reduced absorption of fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K)
*safe in peds/liver dz
Ezetimibe (Zetia)
Class: Inhibitors of Cholesterol Absorption
Use: vLDL
SE: Myalgias, Transaminitis (in the liver)
Fenofibrate (Tricor) Gemfibrozil (Lopid)
Class: fibrates MOA: ^expression of lipase = breaks down lipase Uses: high triglycerides SE: myalgia, myopathy, GI Contra: liver/biliary dz *safe in peds
