Exam 4 Genetics Flashcards
Whats the molecular difference between Ribose and Deoxyribose?
Ribose has an -OH at its 2’ carbon
What is RNA pol?
Catalyzes the addition of each ribonucleotide to the 3’ end of the nascent strand of RNA.
-DNA dependent RNA polymerase
What is mRNA function?
Used to encode the polypeptide sequence.
-May be polycistronic in bacteria and archaea.
-Encodes single polypeptides in all eukaryotes
What is rRNA function?
-helps form large and small ribosomal subunits that unite for translation of mRNA
What is tRNA function?
Carries amino acids to ribosomes and bind there to mRNA by complementary base pairing to add amino acids to the elongating polypeptide
What is snRNA fucntion?
In eukaryotic nuclei. Joins with proteins to create spliceosomes to remove introns
What is miRNA function?
Eukaryotic regulatory RNAs that base pair to certain mRNAs to alter their stability and efficiency of translation
What is siRNA function
Eukaryotic regulatory RNAs made from long ds molecules that are cut into short pieces to regulate mRNA stability and translation
