Exam 4 Flashcards
Disinfection
killing/inactivating microorganisms but NOT the spores
immersion disinfection
soaking
Surface disinfectant
spraying
3 classifications of disinfectants
High Level, Intermediate and Low
High Level
inactivates spores and all bacteria
Intermediate Level
destroys vegetative bacteria and most viruses (Mycobacterium Tuberculum)
Low level
sanitizer, kills vegatative bacteria and certain lipid-type viruses
What are the 2 ways disinfectants work
- disrupts cells physical make-up
- Blocks energy- yielding and synthetic process
What is the importance of removing bioburden prior to disinfection
the organic material in saliva and blood can inactivate chemicals in the disinfectant and the microorganism can insulate themselves in it
6 properties of an ideal disinfectant
-sporicidal (sterilant)
-tuberculocidal
-bactericidal
-hospital disinfectant
-viricidal
-fungicidal
Which disinfectant is used in dentistry
intermediate
When do you disinfect?
-on clinical contact surfaces (not barriered)
-items that can not be heat sterilized
“Bactericidal” and examples of this
-kills at least some bacteria
-iodophors, phenolics, hydrogen peroxide and chlorines
What are clinical contact surfaces
surfaces at or around the chair during treatment
includes: touch and transfer surfaces
touch surfaces
directly touched during treatment; needs to be disinfected or barriered
transfer surfaces
surfaces that touch something that has been contaminated (like a counter top)
Housekeeping surfaces
surfaces around the unit that may be contaminated but are not directly contaminated, may has remnant of aerosols/ spatter
Describe the spray-wipe-spray method
spray the cleaner then wipe it (preclean), then spray the disinfectant again and let sit for the indicated amount of time
What is the purpose of precleaning
precleaning will break down the extra layer of bioburden so the disinfectant will be more effective
bioburden
saliva or blood
biofilm
a mass of microorganisms attached to a surface exposed to moisture ; commonly found in waterlines if not maintained properly
What is the rationale for maintaining waterlines
its essential for maintaining high quality patient care
waste management
the handling of waste in a facility
what is the EPA’s role in waste management
-governs the disposal of infectious waste
-workplace exposure levels for chemicals, heat and radiation
