Varicella Vaccination?
Needed for nursing school, has a booster
● This is a live virus so there’s a risk of coming down with the disease
○ someone who has immunodeficiency of some kind should not get this vaccine
○ Should not interact with others who are immunocompromised after getting it
○ Given IM in two shots
Most vaccinations will cause a flu like syndrome
Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) (dtap in children)?
Diphtheria vaccination (Dv) added into one vaccine
● Given in childhood
○ Give boosters every ten years of Tdap for adults ■ Check with titers
○ If you are not immunized properly then people get whooping cough
○ Most vaccinations are given IM in the deltoid muscle, but occasionally orally
■ DO NOT DO THIS to hospitalized patients unless they are ambulated and going home.
■ EVERY vaccination we give a pt we educate them on the med and then they sign a consent. Then observe the pt for anaphylaxis for 15 minutes.
Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)
Should be a one shot dose. Can prove immunity with titers
Titers is a test to show immunity.
Flu vaccines
Required every year
● Not a live vaccine (attenuated)
● May be given tamiflu
○ Will only relieve symptoms if given in the first day or two
○ Given as a tablet
○ Will shorten duration of flu contagion, will relieve symptoms
■ Can cause dizziness, GI distress
Hep B?
Given in 3 shots
● Require titers
