Conglomerates
A huge corporation made up on many diverse companies. A media conglomerate might include a film studio, a TV network, a cable or satellite system, a video chain, a music company, and a publishing house
Negative Pick-Up Deal
A deal whereby a studio buys (or belatedly co-produces) and distributes an independently produced film
Negative Cost
The cost of producing a movie, exclusive of making and distributing multiple prints. All the expenses from optioning the first script to paying the last bill from the lab, incurred in making one copy of the film - i.e., the final negative, from which the final approved print was struck
TV Safe Area
A part of a film image that is sure to be displayed on a properly working conventional television. Vital actions often are kept inside it.
Cineplex (Multiplex Cinema)
A theater with many separate auditoriums.
Majors
Hollywood’s biggest studios, especially during the Studio Era. Originally, Fox, MGM, Paramount, RKO, and Warner Bros. (later joined by Columbia and Universal)
Video
(1) Closed Circuit Television; (2) The art and technology of television. (3) A work made to be televised or shown on a monitor; (4) A videotape, laserdisc, or DVD copy of a movie or of a video work. (5) An electronic image or work that can be electronically displayed or transferred to film.
Nonlinear Editing
Assembling randomly accessible electronic copies of shots into temporary or final sequence, whether they are stored as video clips or - in the case of digital nonlinear editing - as digital files.
