Description: state abolished commercial filmmaking and nationalized and subsidized the industry; ten major studios built; number of theater increased; films communicate ideals of Revolution to population; works of art including propaganda; social realism to art cinema denouncing tyranny and outraged censors (fifth generation)

Description: number of cinematically fresh and emotionally engaging movies at home and abroad; late 1960s-1970s was difficult to work; Filmmaking was subsidized, but films not approved for production; art films were entered into festivals, but rarely shown in big cities; filmmakers persecuted under Brezhnev regime; great films justify world attention

Description: produced state-supported and independent films; conventional film industry where “across the street” where filmmaking was going on; “Superior Iranian” Films making low budget grants available for films teaching worthwhile lessons and artistry brining international prizes and bookings; pictures revived Neorealism, fable, and children’s films; children movies are taken more seriously; restrictions where women had to be covered when leaving her house
