Background Rate?
The pre-human extinction rate during periods in between major extinction events
Keystone Species?
A species that has a disproportionately large effect on its environment relative to its abundance
Island Biogeography?
An explanation of how natural forces act to control the number of species in a given area
Apex Predator?
Animals in any ecosystem that occupy the top trophic level and may not have any predators of their own
Transboundary Conservation Areas (TCAs)?
Areas that straddle one or more borders and are dedicated to protecting and maintaining biodiversity, and are managed cooperatively
Peace Parks?
transboundary parks dedicated to protecting and maintaining biological diversity as well as the protection of peace and cooperation
Ecosystem Engineers?
Organisms that directly or indirectly modulate the availability of resources to other species by causing physical system changes in biotic and abiotic materials. In doing so they modify, maintain, and/or create habitats
Keystone Herbivore?
A keystone species that affects the composition of the vegetative communities in which it resides through its interaction with the vegetation in those communities
