Exam 3 Review Questions Flashcards

1
Q

What are the steps for making a temporary out of transparent matrix?

A
  1. Select correct crown form by measuring mesiodistal width
  2. Estimate length and trim transparent crown form with scissors
  3. Try the crown in, allow for incisal thickness - do not seat flush with the edge of adjacent tooth
  4. Mark proximal contact spots and poke holes with a heated wire
  5. Fill matrix
  6. Seat crown with facial contours lined up for optimal esthetics
  7. Remove flash
  8. After 2 minutes remove crown from prep, wait 5 minutes and lift matrix off provisional
  9. Adjust, polish and finish provisional

Q

What are the steps of working with a ProTemp pre-formed provisional?

A
  1. Measure the mesiodistal width to determine the prefabricated crown size
  2. The crown form chosen should be slightly smaller than the mesiodistal width of the space, too wide of a crown will result in distortion
  3. Record occlusal height using adjacent teeth to trim down ProTemp crown
  4. Apply vasoline to prep
  5. Remove ProTemp from package and remove protective covering
  6. Trim excess based on pre-measured occlusocervical height
  7. Seat ProTemp with light pressure and adjust cavosurface line angles and margins with TN 5475 instrument
  8. Place in maximum intercuspation and readapt all margins
  9. Light cure for 2-3 seconds buccal, readapt margins, light cure 2-3 seconds lingual, readapt margins, and light cure occlusal 2-3 seconds, then remove and light cure for 60 seconds
  10. Finish, polish

Q

When is opaque porcelain applied and what are its functions?

A
  • Applied first - onto the metal
  • Functions
    • Cover up the metal gray color
    • Responsible for the chemical bond between metal and ceramic

Q

What are some problems with all ceramic crowns (ACC’s)?

A
  • Technique sensitive and time consuming luting procedure
  • Brittle
  • Fragility - occlusal adjustment after cementation
  • Easy to leave margins rough causing gingival irritation
  • Lack of repairability
  • Inability to trial cement the restoration
  • Greater potential for fracture - may not be wise to use on molars

Q

When is a Beveled Shoulder used?

A
  • Used in MCC preps with a circumferential beveled metal margin.
  • Absence of plaque adhesion at the cavosurface line angle is imperative to the long term success of the restoration. A polished metal margin provides excellent reduction in plaque adhesion and a minimal gap space between the restoration and the preparation, resulting in less potential for recurrent caries. Metal margins are typically recommended for posterior restorations as well as lingual and proximal areas that do not compromise the esthetic result
  • 0.5 mm long bevel at 90˚ on a 1.5 mm shoulder, leaving new shoulder at 1.2 mm.

Q

How do you know when to place boxes or grooves in a crown prep?

A
  • If the ratio is less than 0.4, auxiliary features are necessary
  • Retentive box may be required, due to caries or because a groove was placed in a misaligned position.
  • All boxes and grooves should have the same path of withdrawal.

Q

What are the metal contents of:

High noble?

Noble?

Base metal?

A
  • High Noble - noble metal 60%, 40% gold
  • Noble - noble metal at least 25%, no gold content specified
  • Base Metal - noble metal less than 25%, no gold content specified
17
Q

What is the minimum porcelain thickness?

A

1.0-1.2 mm

18
Q

What is the contact distance from metal/porcelain junction?

A

1.0-1.5mm

19
Q

Metal changes that occur during porcelain application?

A

Oxidation of the metal is required to form a chemical bond between the metal and porcelain

20
Q

What’s the most retentive form of adhesion?

A

Chemical Adhesion

21
Q

What’s the simplest and the rapid/reversible form of adhesion?

What’s the use for a functional cusp bevel?

A
  • Structural durability
  • Lack of functional cusp bevel would result inover contouring and poor occlusion

While finishing the margin for a ceramic crown, what do you not use?

A

Carbide burs

26

Steam

Hot water

Alcohol

Acetome

All of the above can be used

A

All of the above can be used

27
Q

What can’t glaze do?

A

Develop specific surface characteristics or coloring (that’s what stains do)

28

Ivoclar Emax can be all of the following except:

Glazed, Milled, Sintered, Veneered with porcelain, Pressed?

A

Veneered with porcelain

29
Q

What types of restorations are beveled margins indicated in?

A
  • PFM or Disappearing → so metal does not stop at axial wall
