Should be stopped a weak prior (bleeding problems)

Pre-op: When should patient be NPO?
6-8 hours before surgery
Clear liquids ok until 2 hours before
Pre-op: When should infants be NPO?
Can have breastmilk 4 hours before
Pre-op medications given (3 categories)
- Anticholinergics
- Opiates
- Tranquilizers / anxiolytics
Anticholinergics given pre-op (2)
Atropin, Robinul
Opiates given pre-op (2)
Morphine, demerol
Tranquilizers / anxiolytics given pre-op
Versed, valium
How often should you assess a post-op patient?
- First hour: Q15 minutes
- Next 2 hours: Q30 minutes
1 post-op nursing intervention
Maintain a patent airway
Most common post-op complications: Fluids (4)
o Atelectasis o Pneumonia o Shock o Urinary Retention o Dehiscence-Evisceration
Most common post-op complications: Circulatory (3)
o Pulmonary Embolus
o Shock
o Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Most common post-op complications: GI (2)
o Paralytic Ileus
