Exam 3 (Lec 19) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three evolution-proof therapies?
A
- slow the emergence of resistance by using moderate doses and targeting particular age classes
- Phage therapy
- Disrupt bacterial communications by introducing cheaters
2
Q
What are the effects of “1. don’t wipe out the competition”?
A
- use no more selection than is absolutely necessary to cute the patient
- the preserves clones of less resistant pathogens that compete and suppress the more resistant ones
- this slows the evolution of resistance
3
Q
What are the advantages of phage therapy?
A
- reduces the chance that good bacteria are killed
- a small initial dose of phage will multiply as they infect bacteria, diminishing the need for repeated administrations
- phage also mutate during replication, as do bacteria, producing new phages that recognize altered bacteria
4
Q
When was phage discovered?
A
1915
5
Q
While the US and other Western countries invested in antibiotics, which country developed phage to treat bacteria?
A
Russians
6
Q
How is “3. Disrupt bacterial communications by introducing cheaters” done?
A
- cheats do not produce public goods and will die out
- cheats can be trojan horses
