what to do in the balance test
have them walk 10-20 feet and turn around. observe gait
what is the romberg test?
stand with feet together and arms at side. have them close eyes and hold for 20 seconds (normally person can balance without visual info)
ask person to perform shallow knee bends or hop in place on one leg (demonstrations normal position sense and cerebellar functioning)
what is the lasegue or straight leg raising test
raising leg while keeping leg extended normally does not produce pain. if it produced pain it can indicate a herniated nucleus pulposus (between vertebrae)
what does a murmur sound like
whooshing sound
what does a pericardial friction rub sound like
squeaky, leathery sound best heard with patient leaning forward
what does bronchial breath sounds sound like
tubular and harsh. only normal from the 2-4 intercostal space (high pitched)
what does rhonchi breath sounds sound like
harsh loud crackling in upper airway
what does crackles breath sounds sound like
air bubble through secretion, high pitched, sounds like velcro. low pitch sounds like rubbing hair near your ear
what does pleural friction rub sound like
hand sliding over wet balloon
what does wheezing sound like
high pitched or low pitched
what does stridor sound like
harsh, crowing sound heard without stethoscope. caused by edema in larynx
what does death rattle sound like
crackles over mouth due to secretions in upper airway
what is kyphosis
outward curving of back, usually at the top. hunchback
what is lordosis
inward curving of lower back
what does an abdominal bruit sound like
swishing sound over aortic, renal, or iliac vessels
