  • SE: increased aluminum toxicity, constipation, indigestion, dizziness
  • NC: 1hr before meals and 4x a day and @ bedtime, don’t crush/chew, take 2 hours apart from dig/war/phen, don’t take with antacids, mouth care, aluminum levels

A

H2 antagonist
-PO IV
-treats GERDS!!, ulcers by decreasing acidity
-lots of drug to drug interactions with heart meds and blood thinners
-SE: D/C, confusion w/older patients, arrhythmias, headache
**avoid alcohol, cigarettes, NSAIDs, caffeine
**if you take it long term it can cause a major infection and pneumonia
-cimetidine-confusion with older puts
NC: can be given to peds, small fr. Meals,
**if hallucinations, stop med
Monitor IV site and heart for dysrhythmias bc H2 receptors on the HEART, monitor PT/INR, monitor phenytoin/theophylline

  • SE: disruption of flora of the gut, OSTEOPOROSIS, alopecia, fractures, gastric cancer, hypomagnesium, pernicious anemia

-NC: chest and lung exam, don’t crush/chew, give in the morning BEFORE breakfast, small frequent meals, check BP, dig and phenytoin levels, AVOID ALCOHOL & NSAID

** don’t give to pt less than 18yrs old

  • DONT LET WOMEN TOUCH OR TAKE-category X
  • SE: gynomqstia, decreased sexual function, decreased libido, impotence,
  • **men can’t procreate or give blood for 6 moths after this med
  • **dont take with saw palmetto
  • **monitor elimination patterns and GU assessment

  • causes orange/red urine, GI, HA, yellow skin or sclera, stains clothes, take with meals, monitor urination

  • SE: constipation, toxic megacolon, dry mouth, dizzy, nausea, fatigue, abdominal distention
  • NC: CNS exam, give after each episode of diarrhea, wanted to pediatrician, low blood pressure, increased heart rate, hypokalemia

  • PO IV
  • treats: increases GI peristalsis, and treats GERDS,
  • contra: obstruction, seizure, prone to EPS
  • SE: EPS!! Tardive dyskinesia, DECREASED BP AND BS
  • NC: monitor IV BP HR, give Benadryl if EPS, give 15 minutes before meal and @ bedtime of reflux is bad
