Promethazine
Antiemetic
- PO
- treats N/v after chemo
- don’t give to brain injury or kids
- SE: hypotension, MONITOR EPS: anxiety/restless, causes PINK URINE, photosensitivity
- black box warning w/kids less than 2yrs-respiratory depression
Ondansetron
5-HT3 receptor blocker (serotonin block)
- PO IV
- treats N/V post chemo
- dizzy, myalgia, retention, constipation, prolonged QT interval, pain @ IV site
- provide ice chips
Sucralfate
Antipeptic
- treats peptic ulcers
- contra: dialysis
- SE: increased aluminum toxicity, constipation, indigestion, dizziness
- NC: 1hr before meals and 4x a day and @ bedtime, don’t crush/chew, take 2 hours apart from dig/war/phen, don’t take with antacids, mouth care, aluminum levels
Misoprostol
Prostaglandin
- treats erosion from NSAIDS and protects mucosa from ulcers,
- contra: ALL WOMEN CHILD BEARING AGE
- SE: MISCARRIAGE, N/V/D/C,
- NC: take with meals or at bedtime, assess for pregnancy
Famotidine
H2 antagonist
-PO IV
-treats GERDS!!, ulcers by decreasing acidity
-lots of drug to drug interactions with heart meds and blood thinners
-SE: D/C, confusion w/older patients, arrhythmias, headache
**avoid alcohol, cigarettes, NSAIDs, caffeine
**if you take it long term it can cause a major infection and pneumonia
-cimetidine-confusion with older puts
NC: can be given to peds, small fr. Meals,
**if hallucinations, stop med
Monitor IV site and heart for dysrhythmias bc H2 receptors on the HEART, monitor PT/INR, monitor phenytoin/theophylline
Pancrelipase
Digestive enzyme
-PO
-enzymes for CF and pancreatic disease Pts
-don’t give if pork allergy
-SE: N/D, abdominal cramps, hypernatremia, hyperkalemia, hypermagnesium
NC: take with meals or snack, swallow whole, mouth care, don’t crush or chew
Sodium bicarbonate
Antacid
- PO
- decreases GI acidity, treats hurting stomach
- SE: electrolyte imbalance, constipation, fluid retention w/HF, acid rebound, alkalosis, hypernatremia,
- *not for HTN or CHF
Omeprazole
Proton pump inhibitor
- treats GERD
- tanzoprazole can be given to kids
- SE: disruption of flora of the gut, OSTEOPOROSIS, alopecia, fractures, gastric cancer, hypomagnesium, pernicious anemia
-NC: chest and lung exam, don’t crush/chew, give in the morning BEFORE breakfast, small frequent meals, check BP, dig and phenytoin levels, AVOID ALCOHOL & NSAID
** don’t give to pt less than 18yrs old
Finasteride
Testosterone blocker
- PO
- treats BPH & increases flow
- DONT LET WOMEN TOUCH OR TAKE-category X
- SE: gynomqstia, decreased sexual function, decreased libido, impotence,
- **men can’t procreate or give blood for 6 moths after this med
- **dont take with saw palmetto
- **monitor elimination patterns and GU assessment
Tamsulosin
Alpha-adrenergic blocker
- PO
- treats BPH
- don’t give to CHF, CAD, hypotension,
- drug to drug: nitrates
- SE: sexual disjunction, decreased libido, impotence, postural hypotension, headache, dizzy, tachycardia
- NC: BP &HR, give @ bedtime, get up slowly for hypotension
Oxybutynin
Antispasmodic
- treats Nuro bladder & overactive bladder
- blocks PNS & Acetylcholine
- contra: MG, glaucoma, retention
- SE: Drowsy, dry mouth, nausea, retention, decreased swelling, tachycardia
- NC: heart rate and blood pressure, do not crush, good oral hygiene, photosensitivity, causes dizziness and vision changes in geriatric patients, danger for elderly if driving
Nitrofurantoin
Anti infective
- treats chronic UTI and prevents future UTI
- don’t give to preggo or geriatric pts
- drug to drug with fluconazole or magnesium antacids
- SE: brown urine, ST &T wave elevation, bundle branch block, blood dycrasias, NVD
- NC: ***drink plenty of water, stains teeth, take with milk or food, monitor heart, treats gram negative, ONLY FOR UTI
Phenazopyridine
Urinary analgesia (DYE)
- treats dysuria (lain with urination)
- don’t give to renal CKD Pregnant
- causes orange/red urine, GI, HA, yellow skin or sclera, stains clothes, take with meals, monitor urination
- drug to drug with nitrogurtainin
- **only take this med for two days
- **IF YELLOW SCLERA, stop med!!!
Dexpanthanol
Increases ach, stimulates GI and parasympathetic NS
Docusate
Lubricant
- PO RECTAL
- treats constipation
- *good for MI, head injury, had a baby
- SE: hypernatremia: >4.2,
- NC: DONT TAKE W MINERAL OIL, increase fiber and exercise, take with LOTS OF WATER, takes 1-2 days to work, short term use only!
