As discussed in class, Elder Kofford gave three suggestions regarding what we can do to help nonmember parents or relatives, or those who cannot qualify for a temple recommend, feel that they are part of the marriage? Name them.
- Be understanding of their feelings, help them comprehend
- Make them feel apart of what’s going on that day
- Maybe arrange with bishop to hold meeting for those without recommends.
What is the position of the Church on exchanging rings in the temple? On exchanging vows, outside the temple, after a temple marriage?
Could include exchanging of rings AFTER the ceremony in that room, but should not include and exchanging of vows.
Elder McConkie related how Oliver Cowdery was counseled to “ask in faith.” What does it mean to ask in faith?
We also need to do everything in our power to accomplish the goal that we seek.
In seeking revelation to confirm a decision we have made, what did Elder McConkie say we will feel if our conclusion is right? What will follow if our conclusion is wrong?
Calm, sweet surety from Spirit. Anxiety and uncertainty.
When, did Elder Holland say, revelation almost always comes?
In response to a question
True or False: Elder Holland said, when God gives a confirmation of a decision, He also gives us the assurance that He will prepare a way for us to accomplish our goal.
True
Elder Holland taught that Satan’s greatest opposition often comes after we have made a decision and received confirmation from God. He drew three lessons from that reality using the example of Moses parting the Red Sea. What were they?
- Satan can oppose us to end, but if we exort efforts, influence dispelled, light will appear.
- After spiritual confirmation, go forward.
- When Lord gives confirmation, gives us assurance to prepare way.
In class we noted that unworthiness will hinder the flow of revelation. We then discussed three other deterrents to revelation. Name them.
- Inconsistency - “It is because you did not continue as you commenced.”
- Fear - “Behold it was expedient when you commenced; but you feared and the time is past, and it is not expedient now.”
- Not understanding the balance of agency and inspiration - “our part and the Lord’s part”
What is the principle of consistency as it relates to personal revelation?
Sometimes you may struggle with a problem and not get an answer. What could be wrong? It may be that you are not doing anything wrong.
“It may be that you have not done the (right things long enough)”
No substitute for gradual, (consistent), and conscientious (daily efforts) to invite the Holy Ghost into our lives.
What is the Light of Christ?
- It is an influence and not a personage
- Is our conscience, helps us discern between good and evil and to repent.
- Leads us to truth, moves us to seek the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and helps us to do good and become good.
What is the spirit of revelation?
Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation.
Elder Bednar described three different patterns of light associated with the spirit of revelation. Name them.
- Quickly, like a light switch
- Gradually, like rising sun
- Few steps with light, like foggy day.
Identify some of the ways the Spirit speaks to the mind.
Sudden strokes of ideas--pure intelligence Logical, makes sense Enlightenment Remembrance Discernment Optimistic, positive thinking
Identify some of the ways the Spirit speaks to the heart.
Fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.
Leadeth to do good, justly, walk humbly, and judge righteously.
What is the principle of stewardship?
Can receive revelation for ourselves but not others.
What is the principle of line upon line?
Many small answers over a period of time.
Confirmations come more as a process rather than an event.
What is the principle of bias?
Each of us is influenced strongly by our own desires and preferences. We may even mistake these influences as the ratification or prompting of the Holy ghost. It is therefore significant when we feel prompted to do something contrary to our personal preference”
Describe the four parts of the revelatory process discussed in class from section 9 of the Doctrine and Covenants.
- You must study it out in your mind
- You must ask if it be right (our conclusion).
- If it is right, you will FEEL that it is right
- If it not be right, you shall have stupor of thought and forget.
True or False: If the decision to marry is right for one partner, it is also right for the other, because the Lord would never tell one person yes and the other no.
False
What are the two great commandments, described in Matthew 22:37-40?

As taught in the testimony found in 1 John 4:7-8, what is one of the most significant evidences that someone has been born of God and knows God? What casts out fear?
