Exam 3 Flashcards
Incontinence
Urinary incontinence
Complaint of any involuntary leakage of urine
Transient UI
arrives suddenly
lasts 6mo or less
reversible cause (acute)
Established UI
includes stress, functional, urge, mixed
Chronic
Stress UI
Involuntary leakage of urine when activity causes increased abdominal pressure
Urge UI
Inability to hold urine long enough to reach toilet
Mixed UI
Elements of both stress and urge incontinence
Overactive bladder
urgency, usually with nocturia and daytime frequency, sometimes with urge incontinence
Risk factors for UI
**Limiting fluid!! Obesity diuretics functional impairments Constipation/impaction alcoholism DM COPD, CVA, MS, PD, acute illness/surgery that compromises mobility or mental funtion, restraints
Causes for UI
.
ARC of the Urinary System
Decreased:
function of nephrons
renal blood flow
elasticity of urinary tract muscles
Degenerative changes in cerebral cortex alter sensation of a full bladder & ability to empty completely.
Assessing for UTI
.
Meds that cause incontinence
- Diuretics
- Anticolinergics (urinary retention)
- Alpha-adrenergic blocking agens ( v sphincter tone)
- Meds that act on CNS or ANS > cough
Functional UTI ARC
Affect ability to identify & reach toilet
- balance
- mobility
- visual impairment
- manual dexterity
