Common causes of Dysphagia
Mechanical obstruction,
Neuromuscular dysfunction
Aschalasia
Neurological dysfunction causing the LES to not open properly, causes dysphagia
GERD etiology
fatty foods, spicy foods, citrus,
caffeine,
alcohol,
smoking,
sleep position, obesity, pregnancy, medications
GERD clinical manifestations
Heartburn
Regurgitation
Chest pain
Pulmonary symptoms
Dysphagia
Barrett esophagus
Complication of GERD. Development of abnormal metaplastic tissue (premalignant).
Sliding hernia
Type I hiatal hernia. small part of stomach pushes above diaphragm temporarily
Paraesophageal hernia
Type II hiatal hernia. Part of diaphragm pushes above diaphragm and stays there. More serious than type I
Chronic Gastritis Etiology
Autoimmune (attack of parietal cells),
H. Pylori infections
Acute gastroenteritis Etiology
Viral infections,
Bacterial infections (food poisoning),
parasitic infections
Sudden pain relief from appendicitis may indicate:
Rupture or peritonitis

Low fiber, chronic constipation,
