Exam 3 Flashcards
List the 6 categories of drugs used to treat high cholesterol / high triglycerides
HMG Co-A Reductase inhibitors (Statins) Bile acid binding resins (Chole/cole) Nicotinic acid (niacin) fibrinic acids (fibs) cholesterol absorption inhibitors Omega 3 fatty acids
What category are these drugs? What do they do? AtorvaSTATIN (Lipitor) FluvaSTATIN (Lescol) PravaSTATIN (Pravachol) SimvaSTATIN (Zocor)
- HMG Co-A Reductase inhibitors
- decrease LDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides
- increases HDL
- slows CAD by stabilizing plaque & reducing inflammation
Best time to take a statin?
What food should not be taken with statins?
4 major side effects pt. needs to watch for are:
Safe in pregnancy?
-night
-grapefruit
-1. myopathy (muscle soreness or weakness)
-2. hepatotoxicity (fever/dark brown urine)
1-2% of pt. develop this
-3. myositis (inflammation)
-4. rhabdomyolysis (chunks of muscle breakdown, clog kidneys - renal failure) (bc inhibs Co Q10)
- NOT safe in pregnancy
What lab test is imp when taking statins?
-LFT
1 most common drug prescribed in the US?
AtorvaSTATIN (Lipitor)
Why/how do HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors reduce cholesterol?
hemoglobin Co-A reductase is the enzyme that allows synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. Inhibiting this enzyme decreases cholesterol
What category are these drugs? What do they do? CHOLEstyramine (Questran) COLEstipol (....) COLEsevelam (Welchol)
- Bile acid binding resins
- lowers LDL (not 1st line)
