Q

What is normal FiO2 in room air at sea level?

A

.21 or 21%, this can be increased with supplemental oxygen to adjust for gas exchange impairment

Q

What are some important safety reminders with supp O2?

A
  1. keep away from open flames/no smoking
  2. don’t use petroleum or lube near it (flammable)
  3. don’t drop the tank

Q

How does supp O2 work?

A

creates a reservoir of O2 that can be inhaled during inhalation

this increases FiO2 which increases PAO2

Q

What is difference between pulsatile and continuous flow?

A
  1. continuous- portable O2 but has shorter duration
  2. pulsatile- O2 is given right at consent of inhalation, longer conservation of tank, not as effective with activity as continuous

Q

What are the numbers regarding a nasal cannula and FiO2?

A

Normal- 21%
1 L/min= 24 %

then goes up by 4% until its reached 6 L/min and 44%

Q

What happens after 6 L?

A

nasal cannula is ineffective as the reservoirs are filled up

do not use long tubing as this also decreases effectiveness

Q

What are characteristics of face mask for supp O2?

A

used for mouth breathers, inaccurate FiO2 but estimated at 40-55%

easy to set up, usually need over 4 L

Q

What are characteristics of shovel mask?

A

designed for patients who are unable to tolerate other systems, possibly due to burn or surgery

inaccurate measure of FiO2 as no facial seal

Q

What is a venturi mask?

A

always seen on hospital wall, given specific amount of oxygen due to adaptors/colors

good for mouth breathers and pts who need higher FiO2

Q

What is an oxygen rebreather mask?

A

delivers 55-80% of FiO2

bag must stay inflated in order to keep CO2 available for ventilation

used usually for pneumothorax not much else
