Q

short acting beta agonist (SABA)

A

albuterol
used for acute asthma attack!! very rapid onset of action and sits on lungs
NI: respiratory assessment
SE: nervousness, palpitations, paradoxical bronchospasm (excessive use of SABA inhaler)
-binds to beta 2 receptors in airway smooth muscle

Q

long acting beta agonist (LABA)

A

salmeterol
has black box warning bc won’t abort acute attack! used for maintenance
NI: respiratory assessment
SE: headache
-binds to beta 2 receptors in airway smooth muscle
-Advair = combo inhaler (agonist+steroid)

Q

inhaled corticosteroids = glucocorticoids

A

often end in -sone, don’t swallow
fluticasone (Flonase)
budesonide (Pulmicort)
beclomethasone (Qvar)
prevent asthma attacks but do not end acute attack!
NI: respiratory assessment, oral cavity assessment
SE: thrush (need to rinse+spit), bronchospasm
-Advair = fluticasone + salmeterol

Q

names of anticholinergics = long acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMA)

A

end in -tropium
ipratropium (Atrovent), tiotropium (Spiriva), combivent inhaler (LAMA+SABA)
