Exam 2: Chapter 14 (Generalizability and Replication) Flashcards
1
Q
Replication
A
Attempting to repeat the results of a research study (experiment) by repeating the original study.
2
Q
Exact Replication
A
Repeat the study under the same conditions, with as few changes as possible
- Purpose: To confirm initial findings (and confirm results were not due to a Type I Error).
3
Q
Conceptual Replication
A
Testing the same hypothesis of a study, but with different methods.
- Purpose: To test generalizability, the truth of the underlying hypothesis, and discover “boundary conditions.”
- Importance: without them, we would never know how generalizable a finding is…
4
Q
Key components of science:
A
- Based on evidence (empirical)
- Progressive
- Cumulative
- NOT free from errors
- Self-correcting → via replication
5
Q
Importance of Replication
A
Builds confidence in the truth of scientific evidence
- Generalize results (conceptual replications)
- Weed out false effects (Type I errors, and detect fraud)
