Extreme mood swings, episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression
Bipolar 2 less severe
More common in highly educated people
Mania vs. hypomania
Both are elated, euphoric moods but mania is more elated/euphoric

Lithium: Adverse effects = weight gain (baseline BMI), tired, affects thyroid and renal function
Anticonvulsant drugs
Psychotherapy (not useful during manic stages
Therapeutic range of lithium
0.6-1.2
Assess trough to determine level

Increased thirst/urination
GI upset
Weight changes
Lithium toxicity: Severe n/v, UE tremors, confusion, vision changes
