Genre painting
A term used to categorize paintings depicting scenes of everyday life.
refers not only to a type of painting, but images of daily activities. gives scenes of everyday life, includes still life. No real overt narrative/story. Often dramatize moral values. Genre paintings can both critique and construct morals.

vanitas
An image, especially popular in Europe during the seventeenth century, in which all the objects symbolize the transience of life. Vanitas paintings are usually of still lifes or genre subjects.
vanity of worldly things, a reminder of mortality. Serves as a reminder of dying in the end (don’t get too comfortable with things of this world).
stadhouder
Cityholders, middle class people: They governed the Dutch rebublic, not hereditary aristocrats.
functionaries
They’re people who worked in the Northern European courts; kind of like bureaucrats or administrators.

discovery VS encounter
discovery: they would look at a painting like the portrait thinking he is just a guy… the incan were supposed to have died off so they don’t acknowledge them. told from view of columbus & cortes. nothing happened before the Spanish got there.
encounter: they would acknowledge BOTH the Incan and the Spanish coexisting and fighting. told from both sided/perspectives.
