Exam 2 Flashcards
Besides shape, what else might attract the substrate to the active site?
By bringing substrates together
What could make an enzyme change it’s shape and active site?
Hot temperatures, extreme ph, or salt concentrations
Describe Glycolysis
- glycosis is the first step in the breakdown of glucose to extract energy for cell metabolism.
- it is one of the main processes of cellular respiration
What types of cells perform glycolysis?
All cells
How are the “photo” and “synthesis” reactions of photosynthesis different?
Photo: ATP + O2
Syn: ATP + Glucose + C02
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Photosynthesis takes place in leaves, specifically in the middle layer called mesophyll. It happens in plants, algae, and cyano-bacteria. Chloroplast is found in that layer.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms and their abiotic (non-living) environment. In other words, their physical environment.
What is a producer?
Autotrophs like plants and phytoplankton.
What are consumers?
Heterotrophs, like carnivores and herbivores.
What is omnivore?
An animal that eats producers and consumers at different levels
What is potential energy?
Stored energy
What is kinetic energy?
Energy in motion
What do cells use to control their chemical environment?
Plasma membrane, enzymes, energy
Do enzymes lower activation energy?
Yes
What are the main stages of cellular respiration?
Glycolysis, Pyruvate processing and keep cycle, electron transport chan (ETC) via the oxidative phosphorylation.
Where does glycolysis take place?
It occurs in the cytoplasm
“Photo”?
Light reactions convert solar energy to chemical energy
“Synthesis”?
Calvin cycle uses products of light reactions to make sugar from carbon dioxide
For every ___ turns of the Calvin cycle, one glucose is synthesized.
6
What are the inputs of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide and water
what are the outputs of photosynthesis?
Sugar and oxygen
Where does the pyruvate processing and Kreb cycle occur?
Mitochondrial matrix
Where does ETC take place?
Inner membrane layer of the mitochondria
