EXAM 2 Flashcards
Know about the social work of the Army and how Booth felt about it, including Booth’s plan as described in the book, “In Darkest England” and whether this plan was successful.
Booth was concerned with the poor and lower class, but had some concerns with the idea of social work becoming more important than evangelizing. Booth created a Farm Colony scheme. Frank Smith and W.T. Stead helped Booth write “In darkest England and the way out!” and Booth began to regain hope that the poor and marginalized could be evangelized. Prior to the Farm Colony Scheme Booth started a match making company The Darkest England Match Factory in order to challenge the working conditions of the poor. The three tier scheme from In Darkest England included; the city colony (rehabilitations centers working in the city), the farm colony Hadley Farm (where young men could be trained to run a farm and gain skills to further their employment opportunities), and the overseas colony (after they had learned and grown they could be sent to a different country to make a new life for themselves). Today the Army’s social work was formalized in order to reflect individual need around each territory.
