Exam 2 Flashcards
scapula and clavicle
- move as a unit
- clavicle’s articulation with sternum is only bony link to axial skeleton
shoulder girdle
- scapula moves on the rib cage
- joint motion occurs at sternoclavicular joint and to a lesser amount at the acromioclavicular joint
sternoclavicular (SC) joint
(multiaxial) arthrodial classification
- movements= protraction, retraction, elevation, depression
- ligamentous support
acromioclavicular (AC) joint
- arthrodial classification
- often injured
- ligamentous support
scapulothoracic joint
- not a true synovial joint
- does not have regular synovial features
- movements=abduction, adduction, downward/upward rotation, depression/elevation
- supported dynamically by its muscles
- no ligamentous support
abduction (protraction) of shoulder girdle/scapula
scapula moves laterally away from spinal column
adduction (retraction) of scapula
scapula moves medially toward spinal column
downward rotation of shoulder girdle
returning inferior angle toward spinal column and glenoid fossa to normal position
upward rotation of shoulder girdle
turning glenoid fossa upward and moving inferior angle superolaterally away from spinal column
depression of shoulder girdle
downward or inferior movement, as in returning to normal position
elevation of shoulder girdle
upward or superior movement, as in shrugging your shoulders
lateral tilt (outward tilt) of shoulder girdle
- during abduction
- scap rotates about its vertical axis resulting in posterior movement of medial border and anterior movement of lateral border
anterior tilt (upward tilt) of scapula
- rotational movement of scap occurring during shoulder hyperextension
- superior border moves anterioinferiorly and inferior angle moves posteriosuperiorsuperiorly
posterior tilt (downward) tilt of scapula
- rotational movement during shoulder hyperflexion
- superior border moves posteriorinferiorly and inferior angle moves anterosuperiorly
shoulder girdle movements
elevation/depression
adduction/abduction
downward rotation/upward rotation
