Exam 2 Flashcards
What are the four tissue types?
1) Epithelial
2) Connective
3) Nervous
4) Muscular
Epithelium
A type of tissue consisting of one or more layers of closely adhering cells with little intercellular material and NO blood vessels; forms the coverings and linings of many organs and the parenchyma of the glands.
Endothelium
First layer coming out of every blood vessel in body, a simple squamous epithelium that lines the lumens of the blood vessels, heart, and lymphatic vessels
Hyaline Cartiliage
Variety of connective tissue, made of protein fibers and ground substance (water)
What is the most abundant protein in the human body?
Collagen
What are the five functions of the skin?
1) Barrier to water
2) Resistance to infection
3) Vitamin D Synthesis
4) Sensation
5) Thermoregulation
Epidermis
SUPERFICIAL (outermost) layer, it is the EPITHELIUM of the skin, there are 5 layers and 5 cell types
What are the five layers of the epidermis?
1) Corneum
2) Lucidum
3) Granulosum
4) Spinosum
5) Basale
What layer of the epidermis is DEEP to the spinosum layer?
Basale
What layer of the epidermis is SUPERFICIAL to the spinosum layer?
Granulosum
What are the five cell types of the epidermis?
1) Stem cells (source of new cells)
2) Melanocytes (pigment ‘melanin’)
3) Keratinocytes (most abundant cell of epidermis, make keratin protein)
4) Dendritic cells (immune cells of epidermis)
5) Tactile cells (little nerve cells to feel stuff)
