Exam 2 Flashcards
How are ions formed?
By adding or subtracting electrons from an atom
Cation-positive charged ion; formed by subtracting an electron from an atom
Anion-negatively charged ion; formed by adding an electron from an atom
What is chemical nomenclature?
System of names that chemists use to identify compounds
Naming an anion consisting of only one element
Keep the stem of the of the element and add -IDE to the end
Ex. Fluorine–> fluoride ion
Chlorine–> chloride ion
What type of elements are ions made of
Metal and nonmetals
What are binary compounds
Contain only two different elements
Metal and nonmetal
What happens to the electrons in a binary compound
When a natal and nonmetal combine the metal looses an electron to the nonmetal. The metal becomes a cation and the nonmetal because an anion
How to write binary compounds
Name the metal first, then name the anion metal(and add -IDE)
What is the stock system
A way to name compounds that can form more than one type of cation. Use Roman numerals in parenthesis to establish the charge of the metal and add IDE to the end of the nonmetal.
Ex FeCl2–> iron(II) chloride
FeCl3–> iron(III) chloride
How to write Binary compounds contains two nonmetal
The first element is written with a prefix to dictate the number of atoms of that element.
The second element is written with a prefix and the the -IDE at the end.
Polyatomic ions
An ion that contains two or more elements
How to write Polyatomic ions
Write the name of the cation
Write the name of the anion
What are binary acids
Composed of hydrogen and one nonmetallic element
Writing binary acids
Write the prefix hyro- the stem of the second element and add -IC at the end and then acid.
Ex. HCl–> hydro-chlor-ic acid
HF–>hydro-flour-ic acid
What are oxyacids
Inorganic compounds containing hydrogen, oxygen and one other element
How to write oxy-acids
Change Polyatomic ions that end in:
Ate–>IC
ITE–>OUS
