Exam 2 Flashcards
How do dinoflagellates get their name?
Dino comes from the “whirling” they do when moving
Flagella comes from their two whip like structures that help them move
What does Unicellular mean?
Single Cell
What does Planktonic organism mean?
Floats or drifts with the currents
What does Benthic organism mean?
Living on, within, or attached to something on the sea floor
What is a Test?
A cell wall
What is a Test composed of?
Cellulose
What is Cellulose?
A type of sugar that is a Polysaccharide
What is a Polysaccharide
A long chain of sugars
(Poly) = Many
(Saccharide) = Sugar
Is Cellulose a strong molecule?
Yes
Two functions of the Test
- Protection
- Structual Support
Do all Dinoflagellates have a cell wall?
No
What is Heterotrophic organism?
consumes organic matter already present in the environment
What is Autotrophic organism?
Organisms that can create its own food through photosynthesis and chemosynthesis
What is a Mixotrophic organism?
An organism that creates its own food, or consumes food already in the environment
What does HABs stand for?
Harmful Algal Blooms (Red Tide)
What is HAB’s (Red Tide)
Large population of algae that creates a toxic and disruptive environment in ecosystems
Can HAB’s lead to PSP and DSP?
Yes
What is PSP and DSP
Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP)
Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP)
What is Biomagnification
The increase of chemicals as you go up the food chain
Two ways that HABs kills fish?
Toxin released into the water, killing fish
Decompositions of dead organisms leading to less oxygen in water
What is Ciguatera Fish Poisoning
A neurotoxin that inverts the senses and is heat resistant
Where does Ciguatera poisoning usually occur?
In Tropical Habitats where coral reefs are damaged
