Exam 2 Flashcards
What are the three types of diversity?
- Behavioral
- Genetic
- Demographic
What is behavioral diversity?
The ability to grow up with the proper socialization and express natural behaviors of the species.
What is genetic diversity? What is the goal?
Variance in gene pool of a species. 90% for 100 years.
What is demographic diversity?
Variety of ages in a population to ensure its survival.
Why is genetic diversity suppressed? What are the effects? (4)
Due to inbreeding. Can cause negative effects (increased disease susceptibility, shorter lifespan, birth defects, less breeding)
What is facultative breeding? Examples?
Can choose when to become pregnant based on environmental conditions rather than on a fixed schedule.
1. Giraffes
2. Kangaroos
What is obligate breeding? Examples?
Animals breed on a regular schedule regardless of the environment.
1. White-tailed deer
2. Sheep
What is parthenogenesis? Examples?
Reproduction through cloning.
1. Hammerhead sharks
2. Komodo dragons
What is embryonic diapause? Species?
Can pause pregnancy and development of fetus when necessary. Kanagroos
What are the three phases of pregnancy?
- prepartis: before giving birth
- partis: giving birth
- postpartis: immediately after giving birth
What are the three ways to diagnose pregnancy?
- ultrasound
- urine tests
- hormonal assays: urine/feces samples
Types of birth control? (4)
- implants
- pills
- separate sexes
- separate sexes during breeding season
What are the 8 abnormalities of pregnancy?
- breech birth
- abortion
- dystocia
- resorption of fetus or placenta
- stillbirth
- faulty positioning
- fetal malformation
- prolapse
What is dystocia?
obstructed birth/difficulty
