- is a code of regulations for public health, accessibility, fire safety and structural sufficiency with respect to bldgs - establishes the min. standards
- is a model code that is modified to reflect regional req. and then adopted as a provincial or municipal bldg code.
- Req. that affect bldg design: window openings, means of egress, design of stairways, openings btwn floors, compartmentalization for fire safety, accessibility for persons with disabilities, travel distance to exits
