Q

Endotoxins

A
  • Harmful nonprotein chemicals in outer layer of normal cell wall of gram-negative bacteria
  • Bacteria dies – endotoxins released into surrounding tissue, induce macrophages to release large amounts of cytokines causes:
  • Inflammation
  • Fever
  • Chills

Antibiotic therapy may worsen symptoms by lysing bacteria and releasing larger amounts of endotoxins

  • Cause macrophages to release cytokines
  • Disrupt normal cellular activity
