Exam 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Pathogens
A
Microbes that can cause human disease
2
Q
Pathogenicity
A
Ability of organism to cause disease
3
Q
Virulence
A
Measure of organism’s pathogenicity
4
Q
Invasiveness
A
Ability to grow rapidly and surround tissues
5
Q
Toxicity
A
Production of toxins
6
Q
Exotoxins
A
Proteins released by bacteria into surrounding tissues that can inactivate or kill host cells
7
Q
Endotoxins
A
- Harmful nonprotein chemicals in outer layer of normal cell wall of gram-negative bacteria
- Bacteria dies – endotoxins released into surrounding tissue, induce macrophages to release large amounts of cytokines causes:
- Inflammation
- Fever
- Chills
Antibiotic therapy may worsen symptoms by lysing bacteria and releasing larger amounts of endotoxins
- Cause macrophages to release cytokines
- Disrupt normal cellular activity
8
Q
How are Bacteria classified?
A
- Stain (Violet Gram)
- Shape
- Ability to use oxygen
9
Q
How are Bacteria classified? Stain
A
