What is the definition of abstinence?
If there is no use of illicit substances or alcohol in the preceding 12 months, a person is considered “abstinent.”
substance abuse
A person is diagnosed as having substance abuse when they exhibit the following behaviors associated with substance use:
Problems at work, home, and school – either missing days or work not being completed as required
Problems with family or friends -
Physical danger
Trouble with the law
The use of alcohol, illicit drugs, and nonmedical use of prescription medications
Illicit drugs include cannabis, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and methamphetamine.
Nonmedical use of prescription medications includes pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives.
Tolerance
Diminished physical and/or psychological response to effects of alcohol or illicit substances. A person develops tolerance when he or she needs to use higher doses of alcohol or illicit substances to achieve the desired euphoric effect (DSM-5).
Withdrawal
A reduction in prolonged substance use that results in problematic behavioral, physiologic, and cognitive changes. Withdrawal causes significant impairment in social, occupational, and interpersonal functioning and is usually associated with an urge to readminister the substance to reduce the symptoms (DSM-5).
Why do college age students binge drink?
even though there has been a decrease in teens and young adults not in college using abusing alcohol, college students alcohol use continues to increase or at least stay the same.
