- Mariam grew tired of the misconception of Muslims in America
- Hijab became a symbol of rejection to white-passing, a privilege she had but often many nonwhite Americans could not afford
- Women wore hijab during Islamic rerivial rejecting Western Influence, reconstructing narrative of Islam in America
- Socioeconomic because it rejects social pressure and influence of western media, declaring difference in society that rejects Muslim narratives
Quique Aviles “My Tounge is Divided into Two”
Quique’s mother went to america to work and got her children to come there one by one oldest to youngest.
- Phase 1: curiosity
reading gifts, and watching movies, English language because language of the enemy
- Phase 2: English became imperil liberator
- started to go to ESL classes, his actual ESL teacher became his friend Pichi who taught him “black english”
- he realized that normal theater had no place for him
- he used “black english” to write poetry as revenge
Phase 3: Subtlety and Payback
- writing and performing one person shows
- challenging English speakers with English shows talking about immigration and topics that make them uncomfortable
- working mostly with black kids
- challenging them to write about tender moments rather than people’s stereotypical perception of poor kids
