Question 2: Name two different straight that can be added into a horse’s diet. Discuss the nutritional components of straights. [5 marks]
Examples of straights- Oat, Barley, Wheat, Maize, Bran.
Straights are a non-complete feed. They provide a poor source of vitamins and minerals, in particular calcium and vitamin D. Straights also provide a low protein quality.
Question 5: Carbohydrates play an important role in provided the body with energy. Outline how carbohydrates are broken down through the digestive process [5 marks]
Complex carbohydrates, polysaccharides (starches), are first broke down in the mouth by amylase. These complex carbohydrates are also further broken down in the small intestine by pancreatic amylase. Disaccharides, result from this, which are then broken down into monosaccharides by sucrase, lactase and maltase resulting in galactose, fructose and glucose.
