EXAM 1/TOPIC 1: WK 1, CH 1, LECTURE VIDEO 2 Flashcards
Why are observational hypotheses important?
We need to know if something is common/the norm/real before we spend resources researching “why” it is.
What is an educated guess that may have some data to support it but not necessarily?
Hypothesis
TRUE OR FALSE:
A hypothesis must be based on data, cannot be a free guess.
FALSE
it can be based on data OR a free guess
TRUE OR FALSE:
A hypothesis must be testable or rejectable, but not both.
FALSE
it MUST be both
What is a theory?
An explanatory statement or set of statements that is supported by a large quantity of scientific data; having been around for a long time as a hypothesis that hasn’t been proven false by data.
TRUE OR FALSE:
Scientific Theories = Scientific Facts
TRUE
Hypotheses are guesses;
Theories are proven, data supported FACTS.
What was the first correct hypothesis in support of evolution?
Natural Selection
Who proposed the hypothesis of natural selection, and when?
Charles Darwin, 1850s
What is the Theory of Natural Selection?
Some individuals in a population have hereditary advantages over others which enables them to produce a large set of offspring with those advantageous traits. As time progresses, the genetic composition of a population will change - the weak will be weeded out, the strong will survive & pass down stronger genes.
What is a Scientific Law?
A generalization about predictable ways that energy or matter behaves. Some theories will be elevated to law.
