Q
Epithelial Tissue Locations
A
- Anything outside/ covers exposed surfaces
- Covers Digestive and Respiratory organs
- Lines the walls and organs of the ventral body cavity
- Forms glands throughout the body
8
Q
Characteristics of Epithelial tissue
A
- Cellularity: made up of cells
Closely bound cells linked by cell junctions - Avascularity: has no blood vessels
Gets nourished by diffusion from underlying blood vessels and tissues - Innervated: has nerve fibers
- Regeneration: highly regenerative
- Polarity different structures and functions between top and bottom portions of the cells
Apical Surface: exposed upper surface
Body exterior
Internal Cavity of the body organs
Basal Surfaces provides lower attachment to basement membrane
9
Q
Functions of epithelial tissue
A
- Provide Physical Protection
Protects against abrasion, dehydration, biological or chemical attacks - Control Permeability
Some tissue is impermeable, others allow for absorption of materials or secretion of others - Provide Sensation
Sensitive to the environment due to nerve tissue
*Neuroepithelium: unique epithelium for senses - Produce Specialized Secretions
Gland cells scattered throughout your epithelium for secretion
*Glandular epithelium: layers of epithelium that all cells are capable or secretion
Sweat glands throughout skin cells
Release of certain chemicals into the blood stream
Mucus within digestive tract
