Types of water mains
Trunk mains – These supply water from original sources such as dams, trunk mains are up to 3m in diameter
Distribution /secondary mains – these draw water from reserviors to subdividied areas, such as a suburb. Distribution mains can be up to 450mm in diameter
Services mains, These feed off distribution mains and supply individual streets and structures.

Career path for firefighters
Recruit – undertaking recruit training. Reports to Senior Station Officer (Course
Coordinators).
Level 1 Firefighter – after successful completion of the recruit course. Reports to the
Station Officer.
Level 2 Firefighter - on completion of agreed units and 1 years’ experience. Reports to
the Station Officer.
Level 3 Firefighter – on completion of agreed units and 2 years’ experience. Reports to
the Station Officer.
Qualified Firefighter – on completion of agreed units and 3 years’ experience. Reports
to the Station Officer.
Leading Firefighter – on completion of agreed units plus successful completion of
Leading Firefighter assessment with a minimum 4 years’ experience as an operational
firefighter. Reports to the Station Officer.
Station Officer – successful completion of agreed units plus successful completion of
Station Officer assessment with a minimum 5 years’ experience as an operational
firefighter. Reports to the Senior Station Officer.
Senior Station Officer – successful completion of agreed units plus 2 years as a
substantive Station Officer with a minimum of 7 years’ experience as an operational
firefighter. Reports to the Commander.
