Exam 1: Pharmacology Flashcards
Indication for use: (preterm labor)
Magnesium sulfate (3)
-Lowers calcium levels in uterine muscle cells (calcium is needed for muscles to contract
-Use to inhibit contractions during preterm labor
-Helps protect newborn brain
Magnesium Sulfate Indication for use (pre-eclampsia) (2)
-Treatment, prevention, and reduction of risk for seizures in women with pre-eclampsia
-Lowers seizure threshold and lowers blood pressure
Two reasons for giving magnesium sulfate
-pre-eclampsia
-preterm labor
Oxytocin brand name
Pitocin
Indication for use:
Pitocin (3)
-Oxytocic hormone stimulates/improves uterine contractions during labor
-Can reduce bleeding after childbirth (first line of defense for postpartum hemorrhage)
-As a natural hormone, it is the “let down” reflex for breastfeeding
Terbutaline brand name:
Brethine
Indication for use:
Brethren (2)
-Used to stop or delay preterm labor
-Slow/Prevent contractions
Dinoprostone brand name
Cervidil
Indication for use:
Cervidil (2)
-used to prepare the cervix for the induction of labor in pregnant women who are at or near term
-works by softening the cervix
Brand name:
Carboprost
Hemabate
Indication for use:
Hemabate
used to treat severe postpartum hemorrhage
Red Flag for use:
Carboprost
avoid use in asthmatics
Brand name: Methylergonovine
Methergine
Indication for use:
Methergine (2)
-Administered in the postpartum period to help deliver the placenta
-Helps control postpartum bleeding
Red Flag use for Methylergonovine
Avoid use in those with Hypertension
Brand Name:
Misoprostol
Cytotec
Indication for use:
Cytotec (2)
-Used to soften the cervix or induce contractions to begin labor
-Effective for postpartum hemorrhage
Indication for use:
Fentanyl IV push (3)
-Used to treat pain during labor and delivery
-Short acting with half-life of 30min so can give closer to delivery
-Can be used with epidural
Indication for use:
Penicillin in labor (2)
-Antibiotic given to women in labor that test positive for Group B strep to prevent passing infection to newborn (neonatal sepsis)
-Most effective after 2 doses IV
Brand name:
Ondansetron
Zofran
Indication for use:
Zofran
-Used for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy
-Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Indication for use:
Betamethasone (2)
-Given to women at risk for preterm delivery
-Speeds up lung development in the preterm baby to prevent respiratory distress if delivered early
Indication for use:
Methotrexate (2)
-Can be given for treatment of ectopic pregnancy
-Stops development of the fertilized egg “basically dissolves”
Indication for use:
Indomethacin
-Inhibits the production of cytokines that may trigger labor, decreases uterine contractions, and can prevent delivery by up to two days
Brand name:
Rho (D) immune globulin
Rhogam
Indication for use:
Rhogam (3)
-Immune globulin made from human blood given to prevent Rh incompatibility in moms whoa re Rh negative
-Prevents development of antibodies against Rh positive blood
-Given to Rh negative movs at 28 weeks and after delivery
Meds for Newborn (4)
-Vitamin K
-Erythromycin ointment
-Hepatitis B Vaccine
-Surfactant
Indication for use:
Vitamin K
Given to newborns to prevent bleeding disorders (hemorrhagic disease in newborn)
Indication for use:
Erythromycin ointment
-Antibiotic ointment
-Given to the newborn baby for prevention of eye infections that can be caused by STIs
Indication for use:
Hep B Vaccination (2)
-Given to protect against contracting the Hep B virus
-Doses given: Birth, 2 months, & 6 months
Indication for use:
Surfactant
Given to preterm babies to keep their lungs open and prevent respiratory distress
(baby too premature to produce on their own)
Off label use drugs: (3)
-Terbutaline (Brethine)
-Misoprostol (Cytotec)
-Indomethacin
