Exam 1 EXTRAS Flashcards

1
Q

How is a drug distributed throughout the body after intravenous injection? (ie central compartment to peripheral compartments) Give examples of vessel-rich groups, vessel poor groups, etc.

A

After intravenous injection, the drug is distributed through the VESSEL-RICH groups first, if not immediately eliminated.
Vessel rich groups: heart, lungs, liver, kidneys brain.
From vessel rich groups to muscle
Muscle to fat
Vessel-poor groups: tendons, connective tissue, bone, cartilage.

Q

What factors will affect the Vd?

A
  • blood volume: high BV, high Vd. Low BV, low Vd
  • Protein-binding: high protein binding, low Vd.
  • Low circulating proteins: higher Vd
-lipophilic drugs = high Vd, hydrophilic drugs= low Vd
