28
Q

Juan injured his leg and was taken to the ER with a suspected broken bone. What would be the ideal imaging diagnosis mode for him, and what is one advantage and one disadvantage (i.e. potential side effect) of this diagnostic technology?

A

Example answer, but explore more in notes:

“An x-ray can be used ideally. Get a clear 2D image of the bone to see if fractured. However, it does not compare to CT scans since x-rays are only 2D. Also, radiation is one side effect since it can cause mutations in DNA if conducted too much.

29
Q

Describe 3 major functions of the heart

A
  1. Generating Blood Pressure: Required for blood flow through the blood vessels
  2. Routing Blood: Two pumps, moving blood through the pulmonary and systemic circulations
  3. Regulating Blood Supply: Adjusts blood flow by changing the rate and force of heart contractions as needed
30
Q

Recognize the Navier-Stokes equation and all of its parts!

A

Inertia force = (-)Pressure gradient + Body Force + Viscosity

31
Q

Heart valve replacement is a common procedure in cardiology field. Explain the difference between a xenograft valve and mechanical valve. List one advantage and one disadvantage associated with EACH type of valve

A

Example answer, but review from slides

  • Xenograft: Animal one is good because if taking immune suppressing drugs your immune system won’t attack it, but disadvantage is it only lasts for like 10 years.
  • Mechanical: Artificial one made by biomaterials which allow it to last longer than xenograft. However, a disadvantage is that it can crush RBCs which in turn cause coagulation.
