Exam 1 Cholerae Flashcards
Vibrio PARAhaemolyticus
G-, motile, anO2
- gastroenteritis to mild Cholera-like illness (massive H2O D, rice H2O)
- seafood (US), common inhabitant of coastal waters
- JAPAN
- cross
Vibrio Cholerae
G - , curved rod with flagella, anO2,
- abrupt massive H2O D, Rice H2O Stool
- INTOXICATION by CHOLERA TOXIN (Same as E Coli traveler’s D)
- Reserv: Natural coastal areas, asx carriers
- Tx: fluids, ABs ok, DUKAROL/Shancol Vacc
- classified by O antigen
Vibrio VULcificus (Vulcan)
G- motile curved rods, anO2 OYSTERS Sx: 1. SEPSIS - bullous SKIN lesions ->death (Tx: tetracycline, death due to liver issues) 2. Wound inf 3. Acute self limiting Dz. Via: normal coastal H2O inhabitants -via cont H2O, OYESTERS, fish kills fast, seasonal
E. Coli EtEC
Travelers D or enteroToxic -Sx: afebrile H2O D -INTOXICTION with CHOLERA TOXIN -cows, food, feces via: Pto P, food poisoning LOW DOSE
Afebrile H2O D is a sx of
E. Coli EtEC (travelers)
E. Coli (EHEC)
O157 H7 enteroHemmoragic G-, motile rod, F anO2 Sx: D bloody after 1-3 days -50% fever -Fatal if HUC hemolytic uremic (kidney) synd - destroys RBCs->kid failure -via BEEF, RAW MILK (cows) P to P -SHIGA LIKE TOXIN Dx: can't ferment SORBITOL TX; fluids, DON"T use AB till Dx, DON"T use antimotility in kids
D is bloody after 1-3 days
E. Coli EHEC H7
BEEF and Raw Milk
E. Coli EHEC H7
Doesn’t ferment SORBITOL
E. Coli EHEC H7
SHIGA-Like TOXIN is in
E. Coli EHEC H7
E. Coli EnterAggregenic
-new in Europe O104 - H4 Alfa-Alfa SHIGA TOXIN sx: HUS - hemolytic uremic synd - kid failure
Don’t use antimotility agents in kids
for E. Coli EHEC H7
CAMPylobacter Jejuni
G- curved rod, motile, MICROAEROPHIL,
low dose
1) PRODROME with fever, HA, malaise, myalgie 12-24 hrs bf D
2) enteritis (infl of intestine) with D: loose stool to dysentery (w/Blood), fever, pain
Self-Limiting
If invasive:
-mimics APPENDIS, LRQ pain (invades mesenteric lymph wtih inflam)
REservoir:
intestinal tract of birds and animals
undercooked ckn, food
Complications:
REITERS: reactive arthritis (like in Shigella)
GUILLIAN BARR (autoimm nerve inflammation)
Self limiting, better after several days
If have prodrome with fever 12-24 hrs before D
CAMPylobacter jejuni
Which bacteria mimics appendix and LRQ pain
CAMPylobacter jejuni
if invasive
Which bacteria cause REITERS (reactive arthritis)
CAMPylobacter jejuni and Shigella
Which bacteria cause HUS hemolytic Uremic Synd (kid failure)
E. Coli EHEC H7 and Shigella
Which bacteria causes Guillian Barr (autoimm inflamm of nerves)
CAMPylobacter jejuni
H. Pylori
G- , curved rod, highly motile, microaerophil UREASE -chronic peptic ulcers -gastritis (infl of stomach lining), cramps, bad breath (halitosis), vomit - targets Pylorus -produces CO2 and NH4 (increases pH to survive and moves around) REservoir: humans source unknown SMOKING is a risk factor stomch AdenoCarcinoma under finger nails eradication doesn't mean relief of sx gastritis due to ingestion of large inoculum tx; Tetracyline and bismuth Dx: biopsy and sampe (7 days at 37C) detect UREASE with CLO
chronic peptic ulcers are
H Pylori
Which bacteria produces CO2 and NH4 as virulence factors?
H pylori
Tx of combo tetracycline and Bismuth is for
H Pylori
which bacteria produces UREASE? which increases pH (?)
H Pylori
CLO used to detect
Urease in H pylori
