Exam 1: Ch.1 Flashcards
Define Aural Rehab
those professional processes performed in collaboration with a client who has hearing loss and the client’s significant others to achieve better communication and minimize the resulting difficulties
The goal of AR is
to enhance the activities of the person and improve their quality of life
During AR process, professionals must be knowledgable in:
o Characteristics of Hearing Loss (I.E.-degree, type & age of onset of HL; Auditory speech recognition ability.)
o Effect of HL on patients..
o Competencies needed for providing AR (referring to degree/licensure/certification)..
This happens with the aging process, it makes word recognition ability harder
Phonemic regression
List the the divisions of age of onset and what they mean
o Prelingual – HL before language acquisition
o Perilingual – HL during speech and language development
o Postlingual – HL after language is acquired. Usually after the age of 5
o Deafened
o Hard of hearing
Primary consequence of HL is…
its impact on verbal communication (speech/conversation)
Secondary consequence of HL is…
educational, vocational, psychological and social implications.
What are the 3 dimensions that WHO uses to define “function”
- Impairment
(Problems in body function/structure, For HL – the anatomical structures of the ear, the physiological process of transmitting sound) - Activities
(Auditory aural communication limitation) - Participation
(Social, life, vocational )
What is used to make a personal plan of care for a client?
self-assessment questionnaire
Define/explain Evidence Based Practice
Research is used to select the best treatment methods and to evaluate methods supported by professional opinion.

Is CORE assessment or management?
Assessment
What does each letter in CORE stand for?
C - Communication status
O - Overall Participation variables
R - Related personal factors
E - Environmental Factors
What does each letter in CARE stand for?
C - Counseling/psychosocial

R = Remediate communication activity
E - Environmental coordination
Briefly explain the 4 types of attitude
Type I - positive attitude
Type II - Positive attitude but may be weary due to past experiences
Type III - Fundamentally negative attitude
Type IV - Rejects hearing aid and rehab process
