EXAM 1 Ch. 1 Flashcards
What is biology?
Study of life
What is energy?
Capacity to do work; keeps cells functioning
What is a nutrient?
necessary for survival but an organism cannot make it for itself; can come from milk, water, oxygen, coffee, sun
-CAN BE RECYCLED
How do producers differ from consumers? Provide an example of each.
-Consumers have to get energy FROM producers
(humans, lions, dogs eat producer (plant) or take in some of the energy)
-Producers can make their own energy
(sunlight converts into energy (chemical energy); they also get energy directly from the sun
Is energy recycled?
Yes
Are nutrients recycled?
Yes
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining a same/stable environment in a cell or whole organism.
Example: maintaining body temperature
What is DNA?
deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that contains the genetic code of organisms; is in each cell in the organism and tells cells what proteins to make.
What are the 3 domains that classify life? Example for each domain
Bacteria, Archea, Eukarya; protists, plants, fungi, and animals
What is science?
Study of evidence
What are the steps of scientific method?
Observation Hypothesis Prediction Experiment to test hypothesis Results and conclusion
What are the basic features that all living organisms share?
They acquire materials and energy, sense and respond to change, pass DNA to offspring
What is evolution?
the study of life forms evolving to suit the changing environment
