Exam 1 CH 1-3 Flashcards
Affordable Care act (ACA)
.
Case Management
a process of assessment, planning, application, coordination, follow-up, and evaluation of the options and services required to meet an individual’s health needs through communication and available resources to promote quality cost-effective results.
Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
- postgraduate training
- certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives.
Cultural Humility
lifelong commitment to self-evaluation and critique, to redressing the power imbalances in the client–health care provider dynamic, and to developing mutually beneficial and nonpaternalistic clinical and advocacy partnerships with clients (Steefel, 2018). Previously, the term “cultural competency” has been used, but recently it has been criticized as an assumption that someone can learn a set of skills or learn about various cultures to become competent as an end point. Cultural humility is an active concept, the force behind treating each person with basic caring and respect.
Culture
set of traditions that are used by a specific social group and are transmitted to the next generation. It plays a critical role among women and their families
Doula
- birth assistant during childbirth/postpartum
- provides emotional, physical, and educational support
Evidence-based nursing practice
involves the use of research to establish a plan of care and to implement that care. This model of nursing practice includes the use of the best current evidence in making decisions about care.
family
basic social unit of our society.
family centered care
focuses on and adapts to the physical and psychosocial needs of the family
fetal mortality rate
or fetal death rate refers to the spontaneous intrauterine death of a fetus at any time during pregnancy per 1,000 live births.
infant mortality rate
of deaths occurring in the first 12 months of life.
informed consent
client is enabled to make an informed and voluntary decision about accepting or declining medical care.
maternal mortality ratio
annual # of female deaths from any cause related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management (excluding accidental or incidental causes) during pregnancy and childbirth or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy
mortality
of individuals who have died over a specific period
neonatal mortality rate
of infant deaths occurring in the first 28 days of life per 1,000 live births.
Community
specific group of people, often living in a defined geographic area, who share common interests, interact with each other, and function collectively within a defined social structure to address common concerns.
Types of community based practice centers
- ambulatory services
- health department service
- home health care services
- Long-term care
- other community based settings
community health nursing
preventing illness and improving the health of populations and communities.
epidemiology
the study of the causes, distribution, and control of disease in populations
health promotion
keeping communities healthy.
population
group of individuals who share personal or environmental characteristics.
primary prevention
preventing the disease or condition before it occurs through health promotion activities
public health nursing
specialized area of community health nursing.
secondary prevention
early identification of people who have already developed a disease at an early stage
tertiary prevention
reduce or limit the progression of a permanent, irreversible disease or disability.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)
- Prayer is the most effective
- aromatherapy
- acupressure
- feng shui
- guided imagery
-massage - spiritual
Steps to Developing cultural Humility
- cultural awareness
- Cultural knowledge
- Cultural skills
- Cultural encounter
breasts
accessory organs that are specialized to secrete milk following pregnancy
cervix
lower part of the uterus
endometrium
mucosal layer that lines the uterine cavity in nonpregnant women.
estrogen
- secreted by ovaries
-development and maturation of the follicle.
fallopian tubes
AKA oviducts, are hollow, cylindrical structures that extend 2 to 3 in from the upper edges of the uterus toward the ovaries.
follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
- secreted by the pituitary gland
-stimulates the ovary to produce 5 to 20 immature follicles
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
- secreted by the anterior pituitary gland
-affecting the final development and subsequent rupture of the mature follicle.
Menarche
the start of menstruation in females. FIRST PERIOD
Menstruation
monthly shedding of the uterine lining.
Ovaries
set of paired glands resembling unshelled almonds that are the organs of gamete production in the female.
Ovulation
ovum is released from its follicle; after leaving the ovary, the ovum enters the fallopian tube and journeys toward the uterus.
Penis
deposits the sperm within the female.
Progesterone
- secreted by the corpus luteum( opening where the egg was; secretes the progesterone. Progesterone levels increase just before ovulation and peak 5 to 7 days after ovulation. During the luteal phase, progesterone induces swelling and increased secretion of the endometrium. This hormone is often called the hormone of pregnancy because of its calming effect (reduces uterine contractions) on the uterus, allowing pregnancy to be maintained.
Testes
producing sperm and synthesizing testosterone
Uterus
development of the fetus
Vagina
canal
-opening of the vagina is the vaginal introitus
Vulva
external female reproductive organs collectively
Mons Pubis
Fatty tissue over the symphysis pubis. covered by course curly hair
T/F
The definition of family and its structure has remained fairly constant over the years.
False
Which of the following is a cost-effective strategy to provide more efficient and effective services to clients extending from acute care to outpatient
settings?
Continuum of care
Health screenings are an important component of primary prevention.
False, it is secondary
T/F
A home birth is typically advantageous for a woman because it allows her a variety of options for pain medication.
False
In the role as advocate, the nurse:
Ensure access to available resources
T/F

False, it is external
A woman reports that her menstrual period occurs every 28 days. The nurse would determine that ovulation in this woman would occur at which time?
Day 14
T/F
The testes need a temperature that is warmer than body temperature for normal sperm development.
False
Integrated medicine
cultural, spiritual, alternative, and modern medicine working together.
Ovarian Cycle
1: follicular phase: FSH tells ovaries to secrete estrogen. get those eggs out
2: Ovulation: LH comes in to mature the egg. LH decreases the estrogen
3: Lutheran Phase: Progesterone stops coming and endo lining thins
Puberty order
1: breast buds
2: pubic hair
3: growth spurt
4: menarche (first period)
14 days of after ovulating
You will have a period if you are not pregnant
Endometrial (uterine) Cycle
1: Proliferative Phase: occurs in the uterus. endometrium gets thicker. Occurs with the follicular phase.
2: Secretory Phase: secretion of progesterone to keep the endometrium thick
3: Ischemic Phase: estrogen and progesterone drop. Shedding endometrium and menstrual flow begin
4: Menstrual Phase menstrual bleeding lasting 3-7 days
pH of the vaginia
Acidic 4.5
pH Semen
Alkaline 7.2-7.8
