Exam 1 Flashcards
System Definition
A system is a set of interacting or interdepended components working together toward some common objective of purpose.
What is a system composed of?
Components, attributes, and relationships
System of System definition
A system whose elements are managerially and/or operationally systems
Examples of the system of systems
transportation, air transportation
Definition of Systems Engineering
The top-level process of engineering a system to meet overall requirements
System Architecture definition?
The fundamental and unifying system structure defined in terms of system elements, interfaces, processes, constraints, and behaviors.
What are the two primary techniques to create architectures
Synthesis (heritage) and discovery.
What is synthesis?
Modifying or combining existing systems to satisfy stated needs, it requires good logic and good knowledge of existing system. Can we combine existing systems without too much baggage?
What is discovery
Leverage knowledge of existing architectures to discover a new one. This requires knowledge of existing systems and abstraction skills. What are the good or bad properties of the given architecture?
What is a functional requirement?
It defines what an item must do. It specifies all intended uses of a product over its entire lifetime. USING THE WORD SHALL
Example of a functional requirement?
The system shall provide communication capability between ground and spacecraft.
What is a performance requirement?
Define and quantify how well an item must accomplish a particular function.
Example of a performance requirement?
The system shall have a data communication speed no less than 100 Mb/s
What is an interface requirement?
Defines how elements interface with other elements and the system to the rest of the world
What is an example of an interface
The system shall provide computer USB connectivity for programming
What are the other types of requirements?
Environmental, reliability, safety, and regulations
Functional Analysis definition
A decomposition of each high level function of a system (identified in requirements analysis) into sets of lower-level function
What is a PBS?
Product Breakdown Structure. Where you are going?
What is a PBS often called?
System Hierarchy
What is WBS?
Work Breakdown Structure, it is built from PBS
What is WBS defined by?
Results and outcomes, not actions.
What does PBS contain?
It contains all products and deliverable to make a final product
What does PBS begin with?
It begins with the final product. ex: Space shuttle
Baseline definitions: INCOSE?
Baselines are business, budget, functional, performance and physical reference points for maintaining development and control.
