Who makes up the population of the disabled?
More mildly disabled students are in our classes.

What is the historical perspective of adapted physical education?
Brown vs. Board, ADA, IDEIA, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1075.
The rights of persons with disabilities became a central concern during the 1970’s when landmark court cases ruled that children with disabilities has the right to a free and appropriate education and training and persons in institutions had a right to rehabilitation.

Section of 504 Rehabilitation act of 1973.
Claimed that there was no discrimination of people with disabilities solely by the reason of disability in any programs or activities that receive federal funding.
P.L. 101-336
Americans with disabilities Act of 1990.
School and non-school programs must be accessible, make reasonable accommodations, provide employment, and public services.

Amendments to the EHA 1987.
Provides services for children with disabilities from birth-3 years old.
P.L. 101-476
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990.
Includes people with on the ASD spectrum and with TBI’s.
Provides related services.
No longer use “handicapped” as a classification.
P.L. 108-446
Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act 2004.
Applies to the definition of Physical Education.
No more short-term objectives for IEP’s, just goals.

Amendments to IDEA.
The definition of a highly qualified physical education teacher is left up to each of the states.
Alternative education settings must be provided if general education isn’t working for students with disabilities.
What does the referral process in the DAPE program look like?
Accumulation of information about the student.
Screening and, with parental consent, a comprehensive assessment.
Development of a program to meet the student’s individual needs as part of the IEP.
Determination of the instructional modification necessary to meet the learner’s educational needs.
Consideration of placement.
Implementation of the program.
Monitoring of progress.
What opportunities can students with disabilities be involved in physical education?
Swimming, golf, cycling, tennis, etc.
What opportunities can students with disabilities be involved in the community?
After-school leisure, recreation, sport, fitness, and wellness program.
Special Olympics team.
What are the criteria for eligibility in the DAPE program?
Based on the extent of the learner’s gross motor delay, age-related performance, or score on a given standardized instrument.
Name the various service delivery models.
Direct services: designate direct physical education services provided by an APE specialist to students who qualify.
Collaboration: designates services provided or implemented jointly with other school personnel to assist students in meeting individualized goals and objectives through all of the physical education options described.
Consultation: designated assistance given to parents, paraeducators, or general physical education teachers who conduct the general, modified, or specially designed physical education program options.
