Autonomic nervous system
branch of the nervous system that controls basic body processes; consists of parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions
sympathethic division
a division of the autonomic nervous system that reacts to danger or other challenges by almost instantly accelerating body processes
parasympathetic division
division of the autonomic nervous system that moderates the excitory effect of the sympathetic division, slowing metabolism and restoring energy supplies
norepinephrine
neurotransmitter released by the sympathethic nervous system into specific tissues to increase their function in the face of increased activity, causes arousal (attentiveness, awareness, alertness)
cortisol
steroid hormone secreted by the the cortex of the adrenal gland: hydrocortisone
ephinephrine
hormone secreted by the medulla of the adrenal gland that affects the functioning or organs involved in responding to a stressor; adrenaline
somatic nervous system
branch of the peripheral nervous system that governs motor functions and sensory information, largely under conscious control
General adaption syndrome
a pattern of stress responses consisting of three stages ; alarm, resistance, and exhaustion
allosteric load
the long term negative impact of the stress response of the body
psychoneuroimmunology (PNI)
the study of the interactions among nervous, endocrine, and immune systems
acute stress
stress immediately following a stressor, may last a few minutes or may turn into chronic stress
chronic stress
stress that continues for days, weeks, or longer
burnout
state of mental, physicial, and emotional exhaustion
REM -rapid eye movement
portion of sleep cycle where dreaming occurs
Non-rapid eye movement (non-rem sleep)

panic disorder
a syndrome of severe anxiety attacks accompanied by physical symptoms
agoraphobia
an anxiety disorder characterized by fear of being alone away from help, an avoidance of many different places and situations
generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
an anxiety disorder characterized by anxiety in many situations and excessive, uncontrollable worry about all kinds of things
obsessive compulsive disorder(OCD)
an anxiety disorder characterized by uncontrollable, recurring thoughts and the performing of senseless rituals
mood disorder
an emotional disturbance that is intense and persistent enough to affect normal function; two common disorders are depression and bipolar disorder
seasonal affective disorder(SAD)
mood disorder characterized by severe depression; usually occurring in winter where there is less daylight
mania
a mood disorder characterized by excessive elation, irritability, talkativeness, inflated self-esteem, and expansiveness
schizophrenia
psychological disorder that involves a disturbance in thinking and perceiving reality
bipolar disorder
a mental illness characterized by alternating periods of depression and mania
infatuation
an idealizing, obsessive attraction characterized by a high degree of physical arousal
